Painting Semi Abstract
I call them “semi abstracts”, because at first glance the paintings seem to be abstract, but when you look at it for a longer time you will discover a perception of a world that could be.
I think semi abstract art lives beween two worlds.
The one world is reality with it’s figurative art and the other world is abstraction with it’s abstract art. Semi abstract art can be abstract, but with some figurative elements. For instance, the subject is not recognizable, but you can get an idea of what the painter could have meant.
Allthough figurative art is straight forward to:
what you see is what you paint,
semi-abstract evokes a feeling or a sense of something rather than depicting it.
Almost all of these semi abstract paintings are painted with acrylics. Painting with acrylics means that you can take the painting wherever you want, because it dries very fast and you don’t get a mess. Sometimes this makes the process more easy, so you can paint it over and over again.
I like the way the tinge always changes a little bit
when you repeat the same movement on the canvas. Mostly I don’t know what the painting is going to be. I just start with a colour or two and make a movement on the canvas. It is very important to begin with anything, because sitting in front of a white canvas gives a terrible feeling. Sometimes this excitement at the beginning leads to a feeling of panic. Then I know I waited too long, so I have to lean back and become aware of my feelings – my body. As soon as the panic has disappeared and all the thoughts are gone, I can start or start again.
