Painting monochrome

As I discovered painting without all my bright colours, I realised how valuable this art of working is. You get a complete new way of looking at your art and the art of other artists. Working on a monochrome painting makes you concentrate even more on elements such as composition, value, lighting and form. You don’t have to think about colours. You can focus on the power of just white, black and all the greys in between. You can build up shadows and highlights to get a vivid contrast. By using all the grey tones you can get all the details you need.

In the artworld it is called: grisaille. It is freeing and it makes you fresh. It makes you look with new eyes.

Of course I had drawn with black and white, but never painted. For me colour has been almost the most important thing in my life, so I couln’t do only black and whites. See my painting process.

It is a whole job in itself to make a monochrome painting and it is not easy to do, but since I tried a few black and whites I am excited about it and surely will try some more. Especialy in ink! To read more about monochrome painting click here.
